Do you know where The Marseillaise was born? Strasbourg

Strasbourg is situated on the Ill River, where it flows into the Rhine on the border with Germany, across from the German town Kehl. The city is situated in the Upper Rhine Plain, approximately 20 km east of the Vosges Mountains and 25 km west of the Black Forest.

strasbourg01With its “grand island” listed as a world heritage site of Unesco since 1988, exudes and atmosphere of its own, all year round. This is the capital and principal city of the Alsace region in eastern France and is the official seat of the European Parliament. Located close to the border with Germany, it is the capital of the Bas-Rhin département. The city and the region of Alsace are historically German-speaking, explaining the city's Germanic name.

Strasbourg is the seat of several European institutions, such as the Council of Europe (with its European Court of Human Rights, its European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines and its European Audiovisual Observatory) and the Eurocorps, as well as the European Parliament and the European Ombudsman of the European Union. The city is the seat of the Central Commission for Navigation on the Rhine.

Historical Background:
In the year 12 B.C the original core of the city was occupied by a Roman camp called Argentoratum. The rue du Dome and the rue des Juifs, formerly the main road and the praetorian road, are the exact rotes used by Ceasar’s regions.

Between the 11th and 15th centuries the cathedral was constructed, and edifice which remains a striking testimony to art in the service of faith and a symbol of the city, rests on foundations of an old basilica of the Rhine. If the Reader remember our article about Prague and St. Vitus Cathedral, can find a lot of similarity between them in style, ornamentation and lead-glasses. In the south transept you can see the Angel Pillar and Astronomical clock, which was inherited from the Reform. It was constructed around 1547 by a team of Swiss clockmakers. The Astronomical Clock is a particularly wellknown attraction thanks to the daily performance given by its automat at precisely 12:30 pm which file out in procession.

The end of the Middle Ages, and especially the 15th century, was a period of intellectual effervescence. Strasbourg became one of the great centres of Humanism and Reform, movements whose ideas were widely diffused due to the invention of the printing press conceived by Gutenberg at the time of his stay in Strasbourg.

In 1681, Strasbourg was rejoined with France, which entailed a great political change for the city, as well as a religious and aesthetic one. Unprecedented festivities marked the coming of Louis XV then of Marie-Antoinette. Mozart gave a series of concerts here and Goethe was one of the famous students of the widely renowned University of Strasbourg. Magnificent private mansions, characteristic of the Parisian style where constructed everywhere. The Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars added the finishing touches to the integration of Strasbourg with the rest of France. Rouget de Lisle composed the Army of the Rhine’s battle song in 1792 here, which was to become “The Marseillaise”.

As history would have it, the city continued to develop. The palace de la République constitutes one of the largest ensembles in the Wilhalmian style, that being the style characteristic of the reign of William II. Equally interesting Jugendstil buildings with lively floral decorations date from this German period after 1871. One only need to see the whole of the European quarter with its imposing Palais de L’Europe (1975), its buildings for the Members of Parliament, its Human Rights’ Building (1995) and the 1999, completed assembly hall for the European Parliament. Seat of the Council of Europe since 1949 and of the European Parliament since 1992, Strasbourg is a capital with a European calling, yet has managed to keep the charm of a city where life is good.
